 Camden

Camden is situated in North London, near the Euston Rail Station. As one the most famous London areas for music and arts entertainment and music, the area is quite popular among locals and tourists. Markets, theatres, pubs and cafes abound. The actual Borough of Camden forms a section of Central London. Hence, it is in very good relation to major sights in London like Big Ben, the Tower of London and St. Paul’s Cathedral. If you want to enjoy good music, alternative London culture and some market shopping, Camden Town is the place to stop in the city.

Things to Do

In terms of arts and music entertainment, there aren’t too many areas in London that are better. One main landmark in Camden is the Roundhouse Theatre, which is located on Chalk Road and offers locals the chance to see live music, enjoy theatre performances and even comedy shows. Having had a stable position with the artistic community for decades now, this theatre truly has its place in the hearts of local artists.

Some of the best of London nightlife can be enjoyed in Camden Town. For good beer and good live music, visit the Electric Ballroom where the likes of The Clash, The Killers, The Raconteurs and Paul McCartney have all played. KOKO is another pub and alternative music venue that has performances weekly. Devonshire Arms, cosy and homey, gives punters the chance to enjoy live music in a laid-back setting. The Jazz Cafe offers a more intimate setting where some local jazz and reggae can be heard.

The Camden Catacombs, a long maze of tunnels and underground rooms, lurk beneath the streets. Originally built to hold horses, these tunnels have now turned into a tourist attraction. The tunnels go from Euston to the Camden Lock Market. Those daring enough can tour through these colourfully dark tunnels and seek out the mysteries of 19th century Camden. Don’t worry. It’s not like they threw dead bodies down there before.

Perhaps the best part about Camden is the shopping. With over 1,000 shops offering anything from jewellery to pet turtles, find something that your eyes fancy is no harder than going there. Some of the best shopping in London can be enjoyed at these markets. Unique London souvenirs and trendy alternative clothing is also in abundance.

Inverness Street features food stalls, fresh fruits and veggies, bargain clothing and a few bars. The Camden Lock Market specialises in handcrafted accessories, music albums, board games and other random items. Other areas for shopping include the Main Street, Camden Lock Village, Buck Street Market and the Camden Stables Market.

Take a look at the Greater London House while in Camden too. This former cigarette factory has transformed into an architectural masterpiece that currently holds some of the most coveted office space in all of London.
